INVENTARI D’OMBRES (INVENTORY OF SHADOWS)

Joan Fontcuberta

2018

Photography prided itself on the impertinence of imprisoning time, but in the end, time takes its revenge.

Kronos thus punishes our arrogance and the testimony we think we have encapsulated forever fades away.

Joan Fontcuberta

The object that contains these recuperated images is a light box that also serves as an exhibition stand. A wooden box, in which the warmth and careful treatment of the details, like the electric cable lines in cloth, serve to wrap them up. This process is, according to the artist, a necessary part of the vital process of photographs because it allows them to mutate, transform and rewrite themselves.

Joan Fontcuberta goes beyond the vision of photography as a documentary element, or a reference to reality. Fontcuberta delves into the idea of post-photography. In this case, the images don’t reference reality, so much as themselves. In this way, the images acquire meanings of their own and the transformation produced by their deterioration converts them into their own vital history. The artist explores archives in the search of photographs that, because of the passage of time or due to defects in their conservation, have been damaged. Fontcuberta recovers the images that due to this deterioration are in the process of disappearing and only in some cases intervenes by reframing them.
