TRÀNSIT BOREAL (Boreal transit)

Josep Maria Mestres Quadreny, Alfons Borrell

2012

The title of the Project comes from one of the electro-acoustic pieces by Josep Maria Mestres Quadreny, Trànsit boreal.

The title evokes the posthumous poem by Brossa “Sumari Astral“.

Mestres Quadreny used a computer programme to automatically generate the sound. The transit of viewers through the space and the cadence of their movements transformed the sound field, opening and closing the sonorous sequences. The attached compact disc is the recording of this eternal Heraklion becoming. The sound field resulting spontaneously generated during an hour, like a photograph that can only an ear can capture.

The printed graphic image is a screen shot of the program.

In the pieces included in this work, Alfons Borrell combines different techniques such as pencil drawing, collage with carborundum and etching. The entire set is presented in a cardboard folder that simulates industrial packaging, on which the title of the project, Trànsit boreal, is highlighted with a green strap.

The Project was proposed by Manel Guerrero Brullet in homage to the poet Joan Brossa, friend, and accomplice of Josep Maria Mestres Quadreny and Alfons Borrell. As a curiosity, the size of the folder corresponds exactly with the length of the arm of Alfons Borrell: 52,5 cm of friendly extremity.

The edition contains:

4 etchings by Alfons Borrell bleed printed on Hahnemühle paper, 300 g, 50 x 55 cm. The technique used is etching, although one of the plates also incorporates carborundum. A print of the graphic scheme of the automatically generated program trànsit boreal. Digital giclée print with Ultrachrome pigmented inks, on Canaletto Liso Blanco paper, 250 g, of 50 x 55 cm.

CD Version of 60’ of Trànsit boreal by Josep Maria Mestres and a text by Manuel Guerrero Brullet.

Screen-printed folder of 52,5 x 76 cm.

Graphic design by Jaume Roure.
