VACUO by Carles Roman

February 16 through March 17, 2023

In 1987 philosopher Frank White first used the term "Overview Effect". This effect refers to the overwhelming sensation that some astronauts have when they see the Earth from space. From this altitude, our planet is perceived as a fragile and fascinating ball floating in the cosmos. This vision often generates a profound sense of insignificança and a feeling of communion with the universe. It is not only the image of immensity that amazes us, but also the idea of it, the fact of being able to think it.

Vacuum is an interpretation of the feeling that produces the immensity. A feeling that gives rise to a great inner peace, but at the same time generates a dizzying feeling of emptiness. In the face of immensity we cannot help but feel fragile, insignificant, almost insubstantial. The abyss of immensity takes a weight off our shoulders, but adds a distressing pressure. It makes us feel both relieved and lost. Vacuo tries to represent this duality of the abyssal.
